Resilient margin amid rapid network expansion
Yum China delivered resilient 3Q26 results, with total revenue rising 8% YoY to US$3.48bn, or 2% excluding FX factor, while system sales grew 3% YoY excluding FX. SSS declined 3% YoY against a high base from last year’s delivery platform subsidies and adverse weather in August. Nevertheless, same-store transactions increased 3% YoY, marking the 15th consecutive quarter of growth. The company opened a quarterly record of 692 net new stores, bringing its network to 19,989 stores. Operating profit rose 13% YoY to US$451mn, with core operating profit up 6%. OP margin and restaurant margin both expanded by 50bps YoY to 13.0% and 17.8%, respectively, as operational streamlining, favorable commodity prices and Pizza Hut license fee savings offset value-for-money offerings, sales deleveraging and higher rider costs. Net income grew 10% YoY to US$311mn, while diluted EPS increased 20% YoY to US$0.91.
Store expansion broadens customer reach
Mgt raised its FY26 net opening target from 1,900 to over 2,400 stores, implying a year-end network of more than 20,500 stores, approximately 13% higher than at end-2025. As of 30 September 2026, the company operated 19,989 stores, with franchisees accounting for 19%. Expansion is focused on lower-tier cities and locations without existing dine-in or delivery coverage. More than half of new stores are located in cities that it never has presence before, helping to limit cannibalization and support SSS. New openings primarily use formats tailored to lower-tier markets, including KFC Small Town, Pizza Hut Wow and Gemini stores (combining two brands in one location). Mgt expects to sustain a faster opening pace over the next few years while maintaining disciplined store economics and a targeted payback period of approximately two to three years.
Our view:
We view faster store openings as a modest near-term drag on SSS due to sales transfer, rather than a deterioration in underlying demand, given the continued growth in same-store transactions. Robust margins reflect disciplined promotions and effective cost control, consistent with Mgt’s focus on profitability over sales. Over the medium term, Yum China should benefit from rising chain-restaurant penetration and more rational industry discounting, while its expanded store network and new formats broaden customer reach. The stock currently trades at 17.3x FY26E P/E, with an estimated dividend yield of approximately 2.3%. (Amelia Deng)
